5 Tips to Be Better at Caribbean Stud Poker

Caribbean stud poker is a popular game that you can play in land-based casinos and online gaming hubs. The game has the same rules as five-card stud poker, but the difference is that Caribbean stud poker is played against the house rather than the players.

The mechanics of the game are simple—beat the hands of the dealer and you win the jackpot, or progressive jackpot in some Caribbean stud poker games. But in order for you to have a better chance of winning, follow these five tips and tricks in playing Caribbean stud poker:

1 │ Know Your Poker Hands

One key to winning a round in Caribbean stud poker is knowing the value of the hands in the game. If you have played online poker before, then you should be familiar with these hands. But if this is your first time to try playing the game, then take note of the following poker hands:

  • Royal Flush – a group of cards that consist of Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10 in the same suit.
  • Straight Flush – a group of five consecutive cards in the same suit (e.g. 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 in the same suit).
  • Four-of-a-Kind – a group of four cards with the same value (e.g. 2 of Hearts, 2 of Diamonds, 2 of Spades, and 2 of Clubs).
  • Full House – a group of cards that consists of 3-of-a-kind and one pair (e.g. 4 of Spades, 4 of Hearts, 4 of Diamonds, Ace of Clubs, and Ace of Hearts).
  • Flush – a group of five cards in the same suit (e.g. Ace, 3, 7, 9, and Queen in the same suit).
  • Straight – a group of five consecutive cards (e.g. 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9).
  • Three-of-a-Kind – a group of three cards with the same value (e.g. 8 of Clubs, 8 of Spades, and 8 of Hearts).
  • Two Pairs – two pairs of the same card (e.g. Queen of Hearts, Queen of Spades, 9 of Clubs, and 9 of Diamonds).
  • One Pair – a pair of the same card (e.g. 10 of Hearts and 10 of Clubs).
  • High Card – a group of cards with the highest rank (e.g. Ace, Queen, 10, 9, and 8).

Poker Hands

Knowing the card combinations is not enough. You should be aware of the payout for each hand as well. This way, you get an idea which hand pays best. Below are the payouts for each card combination:

  • Royal Flush – 100-to-1 payout
  • Straight Flush – 50-to-1 payout
  • Four of a Kind – 20-to-1 payout
  • Full House – 7-to-1 payout
  • Flush – 5-to-1 payout
  • Straight – 4-to-1 payout
  • Three of a Kind – 3-to-1 payout
  • Two Pair – 2-to-1 payout
  • Pair – 1-to-1 payout

Now that you know the equivalent payout for each hand, you can focus on getting the highest-paying hand which is the royal flush. The probability of getting this hand is low, so you should also aim for other hands like straight flush and four-of-a-kind.

2 │ Know When to Fold or Raise

During the game, the dealer gives you five initial cards. Then, you have the option to fold or raise. To fold means that you stick with your original cards. To raise, on the other hand, means that you are going to return some of your cards in exchange for a new set. However, you need to increase your bet for this option.

To win a round, you need to be critical when to fold or raise. It is recommended that you raise when you are holding one pair or better. This gives you the leverage to create a better combination. In addition, the probability of beating the dealer is higher with a pair. On the contrary, you need to fold if you do not hold an Ace or King.

3 │ Check the Dealer’s Hole Card

Aside from just focusing on your cards, you should also check the hole card of the dealer. This can help you decide your next move especially when you do not know if you are going to raise or fold. It is recommended to raise if the dealer’s card is any card value except for Ace or if the card value matches yours.

Dealer's Card

You should also raise if you have a Queen or higher, and if the dealer’s hole card is any value less than your fourth highest card. Say, you are holding a Queen, 10, 5, 4, and 3. Since your fourth highest card is 4, and if the dealer’s card is 3 or 2, you should call. Meanwhile, you should fold if the dealer’s card is among Ace, King, Queen, or Jack.

4│ Be Careful with the Ace-King and Ace-Queen Cards

Another good time to raise is when you have Ace-King cards. Be wary, though, because not all Ace-King cards can benefit you. You still need to consider your community cards as well as the dealer’s cards. In this case, the best combination that would work is a high A-K hand. For instance, you have Ace, King, Queen, and two other cards. You have a good chance of beating the dealer if one of your initial cards is the same as one of the faceup cards of the dealer.

On the contrary, Ace-Queen cards are a big no-no in your card combination. Most players think that having an Ace-Queen will give them a decent hand. That is not true. In fact, this hand will lose to the dealer easily.

5 │ Fold When There Is No High Card

To beat the dealer, you must make it a point that you have a strong hand. A strong hand usually consists of an Ace, King, Queen, and Jack. So if you do not see any of these powerful cards, then you should consider folding your hands. After all, you do not want to risk your bankroll into a bet that would most likely lose, right?

With these top 5 Caribbean stud poker tips, you can confidently go to your preferred casino to play a round. Just be sure to memorize the high-paying hands, know when to fold or raise, and be sure that you have strong card for you to beat the dealer.
